continuing on the Simpsons theme it is most appropiate that I say DOH!

While admittedly I didn't intend to respond to the mailing list, in fact I
didn't even realise the email was sent to the mailing list I figured it
would be a good idea to attempt an analogy around the scoping of the
"this" keyword in JavaScript.

The astute may have noticed the reference to "this" email on line 7
indicates that the reply should be to "this" email, in my case I assumed
the email being sent by Valery to me. As the mail was send via the
mailing list the this context actually changed unknown to the unobservant
subscriber. Obviously clicking on the reply button the reply went
straight to the group and not the initial sender.

In many ways this is just like being in a nested JavaScript function and
expecting the "this" pointer to refer to the parent scope. I'm pretty
sure anyone coming from Java or C# ran into this one pretty early if the
delved straight into JavaScript. Personally I was horiffied when I first
started working with the YUI in 2006 to discover

var me = this;

this meant that if I wrote a purge or flush method within that method I'd
be purging myself or flushing myself, neither of which sound really
pleasant :-)

As I was coming from a Object Oriented paradigm and bending JavaScripts
prototype based inheritance into a strongly typed language using the apply
method on an object was slightly more palatible for me and began to knock
myself out with prototype chaining. After reading JavaScripts: The Good
Parts by Douglas Crockford I'm much more in favour of the Module Pattern
and avoiding the potential for confusion around the keyword "this". If
you are new to JavaScript give this book a go.

RE: The Resume as a .docx - what can I say it's a valid MIME TYPE -
application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document

:-)

For the record this email was written on a Mac Book Air in an effort to
display my lack of prejudice.

Cheers

Pat

P.S. Please feel free to make fun of the guy that applied for a job via
the Mailing List at the next Meet-up :-)

Proposed Meeting Presentations

Hi Craig & Lachlan,

Not sure which is best direct email to contact on - so just using mailing
group for initial.

Two of our lead developer partners (who have joined sydJS) are happy to do
presentations if the group wants.

Cassandra Buono (cassandra.buono@alt-designit.com.au) - would be happy to
do one on building Windows 8 Metro App using WinJS

Robert Webster (robert.webster@1upit.com) - would be happy to do one on
jQuery Mobile and building an in-field service app.

Also if any one else in the group is interested in doing some sample code
projects for KendoUI and Sencha Architect 2 let me know - we are happy to
do $ contribution if required. We would put up on the
mydigitalstructure.com/examples page and also potentially could be used
for meeting presentations.

If interested email me at mark.byers@ibcom.biz.

Looking forward to next meeting.
